Film Vs. Digital....WWSMACKDOWN

Thu Apr 16, 2009, 1:25 PM
I've gone to two lectures in the last week at SCAD and have noticed a trend among the photographers...

THEY'RE ALL FILM SNOBS WHO THINK DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHERS DON'T HAVE TALENT.

This, needless to say, PISSES ME OFF.

Film's great. I think there are many awesome things you can do with film, and it's not easy to master. I have much respect for film photographers.

But why do so many people think digital photographers take any less time, care, and creativity in making a product?

I personally spend HOURS UPON HOURS and DAYS working on getting the perfect shot and editing the colors just so, just as others in a physical darkroom.

It is not easier to take a good photograph with a digital camera. The camera doesn't automatically say "hey, move over to the left." or "there's better lighting behind you." A good photographer is a good photographer. A good photograph doesn't just happen because of equipment. And no matter how many megapixels or whatnot on your camera you have, a picture won't look good unless YOU'RE GOOD.

The two forms of photography are just that- TWO DIFFERENT FORMS.

Therefore, one CANNOT be superior to another.

Sure, I haven't mastered submerging my photos in stop and fix, but YOU haven't mastered mask layering. They are two different talents.

And for another thing-

Film is awesome for fine art. But how do you seriously plan on getting a job with Vogue with a film only background? Just because you don't like digital doesn't mean you can tell Vogue they're wrong and expect a job. The world is changing. Accept it. Embrace it.

I'm not saying we should only be taught digital to become better photographers. I AM saying that in order to GET A JOB we need to keep up with technology.

Anyway,

I DON'T HATE FILM,

BUT I HATE FILM SNOBS!!!

"We're all still here," she said. "We're still fighting.

Come on now."
Thankyou! :) Same goes for you, sir, really.

I've been going NUTS over college. I LOVE it here. I'm challenged, and encouraged, which is nice. (No, I'm NOT paid to say that by the school.) It's all workworkwork...and I'm ADDICTED to it.

Isn't it odd we've been deviant friends for four years? I don't really know why you added me- I wasn't particularly talented at that point lol.

Abi. I have a question. What is your little tiny picture of the blue and black squiggles supposed to be?

Every time I look at it it looks like a sad little man to me.
